Honeymoon Husband (Avalon Romance) ReviewI have been searching for 'cleaner' romances than the ones I've been finding and when I came across this publisher I thought I'd give their romances a try. This one sounded good. Hawaii, Honeymoons, etc. The potential for a good story was there. But....
Starting with the positives...
The atmosphere is great. Hawaii-it's beautiful, tropical, romantic. It's a great setting for a romance. Jeremy came off as a pretty good guy. The author tried her best to inject a Hawaiian authenticity to the book (having locals speak in pidgin, discussing the names of tropical fish, Hawaiian foods, etc.) This was actually a good/bad as after a while it felt more like a lecture and the constant naming of things Hawaiian didn't flow that well.
As for the negatives....
Well, first off was Hannah. I like all kinds of heroines and I don't mind if they're quiet and shy-as long as they've got a backbone! I can't stand a heroine who just walks around taking what everyone dishes out as though she doesn't have a personality or will of her own. Unfortunately, Hannah was like that. From the very start she just seemed to walk around in a fog, too timid to really do or say anything for herself. I was really hoping for more pluck-or at least she'd develop more pluck but by the end of the story she was exactly the same. It got to the point that I really didn't like her at all.
And Jeremy, while basically likable, wasn't really a very strong character. His inner dialogue revealed a man who hadn't really found who he was yet-placing his worth on other people's opinions of himself and whether he 'succeeded' in life by finding a discovery. He wasn't comfortable with Jeremy and consequently, neither was I.
The basic idea of the story was interesting, but the way it unfolded just wasn't too realistic. I expected it to be more that Hannah decides to take the honeymoon by herself after Earl dumps her. That would have given her some pluck and some time to distance herself from whatever feelings she had for him (though to be honest, I'm not sure why she held on so long. He was a loser). Instead, she's dumped on the plane over. One of the problems with that is it just didn't ring true that she'd fall in love with Jeremy ONE day after getting dumped. Also, Hannah and Earl were supposed to get married in Hawaii (I'm assuming that first day given they're on the honeymoon and they've never lived together previously) but it appears the two of them were just going to wander around looking for a place to marry them on the spur of the moment. This isn't an elopement so why didn't Hannah have any preparations for the wedding made? Like a dress, for instance.
What finally threw me over the edge was when Earl comes back, the contest guy tries to blackmail her into getting married so he can get his magazine story (huh?) (also, Hannah 'attempts' to tell him she was dumped 4 times when she see's him face to face but she's so mousy, she lets him leave every time without telling him. Then, when he blackmails her, she just says 'well, okay. I don't really like Earl but I kind of used to like Earl and yes, I know he left me but I guess I'll marry him.... see where I"m going here?). Yes! Hannah decides to marry Earl under the threat of being sued by accepting a contest win when she lost it's qualifications. I about screamed. This woman was like a stepford wife.
So...I would pass on this one. This one might be okay for a pre-teen maybe, but the characters never really acted in an adult manner.Honeymoon Husband (Avalon Romance) Overview
